Description
In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, during the Great Depression, the Walton family makes its small income from its saw mill on Walton's Mountain. The story is told through the eyes of John Boy, who wants to be a novelist, goes to college, and eventually fulfills his dream. The saga follows the family through depression and war, and through growing up, school, courtship, marriage, employment, birth, aging, illness and death.

- Season 2: 24. Car, The (1974). John Boy is in need of a car, now that he is in college. He finds a good car owned by a neighbor, but he refuses to part with it, even after John Boy makes a deal with him to trade the car for work performed on his house.
- Season 3: 1. Conflict, The (1974). Grandpa's sister in law is being forced out of their home by a government project. The Waltons go to their land to help defend the homestead. John-Boy is torn between his ideals and the family loyalty.
- Season 3: 2. First Day, The (1974). Everything seems to go wrong on John-Boy's first day at Boatwright University -- though he makes some new friends, he also leaves an important document at home, and becomes the butt of a cruel practical joke. He also learns about the difficulties of fitting into college life as a freshman beset by upperclassmen determined to make his life miserable. In the meantime, back at the Waltons' Mountain School, Jason hesitantly tries to fill John-Boy's shoes as the eldest of the remaining six Walton children.

He tells her that there are free Art classes available at his university (Boatwright). He tries to woo her away to France so he can live in a garret with her as his inspiration. - Season 3: 7. System, The (1974). John Boy tutors another person on a scholarship. He cheats during test and has to be turned in. John Boy acts as his lawyer to keep him in college rather than be expelled.
- Season 3: 8. Spoilers, The (1974). A mountain man moves his family back to Walton's Mountain. The family members (except the father) are city folks and do not enjoy the mountains. Spoiled brats who try to show the Waltons they are country hicks.
- Season 3: 9. Marathon, The (1974). John Boy participates in a dance marathon with Daisy. Daisy turns up later in the series as a visiting friend and love interest for John Boy.
- Season 3: 10. Book, The (1974). John Boy gets his book of short stories published. Everyone happy - until the bill comes. Turns out it is a vanity press that just prints books but you pay for it.
- Season 3: 11. Job, The (1974). John Boy gets a job reading to a blind woman. He encourages her to live instead of sulk because of her blindness.
- Season 3: 12. Departure, The (1974). John Walton gets job in city because he wants an adventure. He gets a small adventure working at a shipyard, but is happy to return home.
- Season 3: 13. Visitor, The (1974). Former neighbor, an elderly man comes back to Walton's Mountain to live. Everyone helps to get the house ready for wife. BUT wife is dead. The man does not accept this fact.

- Season 3: 15. Lie, The (1975). Ben secretly borrows John Boy's car and gets both into trouble.
- Season 3: 16. Matchmakers, The (1975). Cora Beth joins the series and marries Ike.
- Season 3: 17. Beguiled, The (1975). John-Boy encounters a sassy, spoiled, selfish gal whose selfish ways cause problems for John Boy and even for Jim Bob's friend.
- Season 3: 18. Caretakers, The (1975). Grandpa and Grandma feel left out and move to house-sit for for a neighbor. John has to hire someone to help at mill who turns out to be no good. Things get better and work out for all.
- Season 3: 19. Shivaree, The (1975). A cousin who is named after Olivia visits. She is preparing for her wedding. Wedding plans go wrong when the friends plan a shivaree. The husband-to-be does not like it. He is an uptight guy.
- Season 3: 20. Choice, The (1975). John wants to expand the mill and call it Walton and Sons, but Jason wants to study music. He tries to get a scholarship. John-Boy is told he should write a novel.
- Season 3: 21. Statue, The (1975). Grandpa wins a statue at a raffle. The statue resembles his old girlfriend. Grandma does not like having the statue around. They end up getting rid of the statue.
- Season 3: 22. Song, The (1975). Jason writes a song to sing with Bobby Bigalow's band. His brother Ben convinces him to have a gal sing with him. Ben likes this gal. The gal seems to like Jason. In the end, it works out.
- Season 3: 23. Woman, The (1975). John-Boy falls for a poet who is visiting his college. He almost leaves with her to New York. Meanwhile, John and Olivia celebrate their anniversary by renewing their vows.
- Season 3: 24. Venture, The (1975). John takes on a loan to improve the business and he gets a big order. Grandpa gets sick and cannot help at the mill. John gets sick and cannot do it. The neighbors pull together to help build the new improved mill.
- Season 4: 1. Sermon, The (1975). The reverend and teacher get married. Olivia is asked to be the substitute teacher and John Boy is asked to preach the sermon.
- Season 4: 2. Genius, The (1975). John-Boy's dean asks him to take care of a 16-year-old genius college student for a weekend. The genius is gifted in all academic areas, but woefully lacking in social graces. He ends up helping in a play and is able to join in family fun.
- Season 4: 3. Fighter, The (1975). A prize fighter (Cleavon Little) arrives searching for work, living and training in the Waltons' barn. Some are put off by his fighting, but he wants to build a church in the community. Loses fight but community helps to build the church.
- Season 4: 4. Prophecy, The (1975). John's 25th high school reunion is being planned; he thinks he is not successful, but at the reunion, everyone thinks he is the winner. John-Boy fears he will never make a living as a writer. Jim-Bob makes a profound comment.
- Season 4: 5. Boondoggle, The (1975). A traveling reporter visits the mountain to write story about Judge Baldwin. What he finds upsets the Baldwin sisters and disturbs the community. The report digs for more information and finds the truth which is much better.
- Season 4: 6. Breakdown, The (1975). Jason spends too much time playing with a band. His school work, music lessons, and health begin to suffer. Comes to understanding with band. John-Boy gets a part-time job in a library; the librarian wants him to choose it as a profession.
- Season 4: 7. Wing-Walker, The (1975). Jim-Bob falls in love with a wing-walker. John-Boy writes an article about her. She takes a lot of risks. Maude Gormley gives her goat, Myrtle, to the Waltons. They give her a rocking chair.
- Season 4: 8. Competition, The (1975). Mary Ellen and Erin both fall for a forestry student. He is there to study the trees on Walton's Mountain. Erin and the forestry student date.
- Season 4: 9. Emergence, The (1975). Marsha, John-Boy's old girlfriend, returns to sell her family home at the urging of her fiance. Wedding plans end when the fiance realizes the home is in debt. Olivia helps a disadvantaged student get glasses.
- Season 4: 10. Loss, The (1975). Cousin Olivia, who married on the mountain in The Shivaree episode, returns to Walton's Mountain following her husband's sudden death. Family cat has kittens and dies giving birth. Elizabeth and Cousin Olivia both have to heal.
- Season 4: 11. Abdication, The (1975). King Edward VIII abdicates the throne and the Waltons follow the story. Meanwhile, a movie production team is in town and John-Boy reconnects with a friend who's part of the production crew. John-Boy is offered a job.
- Season 4: 12. Estrangement, The (1975). The family helps Vera Walton and her husband, Wade, navigate a rough patch in their marriage. She cannot get used to the city and he is too used to it. He has fallen into the criminal element.
- Season 4: 13. Nurse, The (1975). Mary Ellen is eager to begin nursing school, but is unhappy to learn that she lacks the education in algebra and chemistry needed to enter.
- Season 4: 14. Intruders, The (1975). Ben is upset at how he is treated at the mill. He gets a job at another lumber company, not realizing they are competing for the same jobs. Grandpa uses his smarts to get one over the competing lumber company. Ben returns to the mill.
- Season 4: 15. Search, The (1976). Olivia and Elizabeth take a car trip; Jim-Bob is forced to also go. They have car trouble. Elizabeth wanders off. Olivia and Jim-Bob find her but by now, all are lost. Jim-Bob uses his skills to keep everyone safe till they are found.
- Season 4: 16. Secret, The (1976). Jim-Bob wonders if he is adopted because he does not look like other family members. No one wants to talk about his birth. Eventually the truth comes out as to what happened when he was born.
- Season 4: 17. Fox, The (1976). Ben starts to hunt animals for their skins to sell for profit. Meanwhile, the Rough Riders are holding a reunion. Grandpa, for all his talk about charging up the hill with Teddy Roosevelt, does not want to attend.
- Season 4: 18. Burnout, The (1976). John-Boy smokes a pipe and Grandpa leaves a heater plugged in and turned on. A fire breaks out, burns most of the house. John-Boy loses his completed novel to save Erin. John-Boy, Grandpa, and Erin all feel miserable.
- Season 4: 19. Big Brother, The (1976). John-Boy sees a young innocent looking girl who appears to be traveling alone. He takes her home. She seems to fit in, but Grandpa sees through her.
- Season 4: 20. Test, The (1976). Olivia gets a job in the city as a dressmaker. She enjoys it but soon realizes she misses the family too much. Maude Gormley isn't adjusting well to life in a retirement home and returns to the mountain.
- Season 4: 21. Quilting, The (1976). Mary Ellen resists joining in on a quilting when she reaches the marrying age. This hurts Grandma's feelings.
- Season 4: 22. House, The (1976). An old abandoned home is condemned. Grandpa wants the wood and Grandma wants to save the house - it was where he and she first kissed. She is upset, but feels better when Grandpa saves the stained glass window.
- Season 4: 23. Fledgling, The (1976). John-Boy wants to buy a printing press to start his own newspaper. Works hard to earn money for the down payment.
- Season 4: 24. Collision, The (1976). Selena Linville returns. She talks to John-Boy about the rebellion in Spain.
- Season 5: 1. First Edition, The (1976). John-Boy publishes his first newspaper. It includes a story about Ben's troubles. Olivia is mad. But John-Boy has to publish the story to follow his convictions.
- Season 5: 2. Vigil, The (1976). Grandma is sick and Mary Ellen misdiagnosis the ailment. Grandma has to go to the hospital and Mary Ellen realizes she has a lot to learn.
- Season 5: 3. Comeback, The (1976). Jason's scholarship at the music academy is canceled. He gets a job at the Dew Drop Inn. Red Turner, who lost his son in an earlier episode, is talked into performing at the Dew Drop.
- Season 5: 4. Baptism, The (1976). A famous evangelist visits Walton's Mountain to preach and baptize converts. He is too much of a fire and brimstone preacher for John's taste.
- Season 5: 5. Firestorm, The (1976). John Boy publishes excerpts from Hitler's writing in his newspaper and the town is upset. The town wants to hold a burn book party, but John-Boy makes them realize how wrong they are.
- Season 5: 6. Nightwalker, The (1976). An unknown person is walking around Walton's Mountain at nights and causing worry. Ike opens Godsey's Hall and Jason decides to hold a community dance. The town meets the unknown stranger and welcomes him in.
- Season 5: 7. Wedding: Part 1, The (1976). Mary Ellen is engaged to Dr David Spencer and they plan the wedding. Dr Curtis Willard arrives to be the town doctor. Mary Ellen begins to have second thoughts about her engagement.

- Season 5: 13. Last Mustang, The (1976). A wild mustang is captured on Walton land and Grandpa wants it to remain be and remain free. Meanwhile, it is sheriff election time and John-Boy writes about the candidates. Ep is up for re-election.
- Season 5: 14. Rebellion, The (1976). Another woman begins to play the church organ instead of Grandma which upsets Grandma. Olivia is restless and decides to get a perm with terrible results.

- Season 5: 16. Elopement, The (1977). The forestry student who visited the mountain a few episodes previous, now returns to the mountain and asks Erin to marry him.
- Season 5: 17. John's Crossroad (1977). John takes a job away from home to make more money. At the job, everyone in the office fears the manager who makes life miserable for all. John leaves because it is no way to live or work. Elizabeth is a tomboy.
- Season 5: 18. Career Girl, The (1977). Erin graduates from high school still having no direction for her life. Gets a job at school to buy a typewriter for John-Boy.
- Season 5: 19. Hero, The (1977). The Waltons find out Sheriff Ep is a decorated war hero and John-Boy wants to write about it. Ep wants to keep it quiet. Also, an old friend of Ep's comes to visit. Jim-Boy likes to talk to her about cars and war.
- Season 5: 20. Inferno, The (1977). John-Boy won the right to accompany news reporters to a news event - the Hindenburg. Sees it burst into flames.
- Season 5: 21. Heartbreaker, The (1977). Curtis Willard's sister left her husband to pursue a singing career. Visits Curtis. Jason falls in love with her and helps her with singing.
- Season 5: 22. Long Night, The (1977). Grandma is in the hospital and Grandpa wants to bring her home. He is forbidden to visit in the hospital because she needs her rest. (Ellen Corby in real life had a stroke and was not able to perform.)
- Season 5: 23. Hiding Place, The (1977). A Baldwin relative visits. John-Boy wants to interview her about events in Europe. She wants to forget. Jason joins the National Guard and Olivia is upset.
- Season 5: 24. Go-Getter, The (1977). John and Ben again come to blows about work at the mill. Ben quits and becomes a used-car salesperson. Does a good job - but with questionable sales tactics. Has to make the car sales right.
- Season 5: 25. Achievement, The (1977). John-Boy sent his novel to a publisher and does not hear anything. He travels to New York to get an update. They like his novel and will publish it.
- Season 6: 1. Hawk, The (1977). A hawk is attacking the Waltons' chickens. Grandpa and Jim-Bob try to catch it. Also, a new minister joins the community.
- Season 6: 2. Stray, The (1977). The Waltons find a 12 year old runaway in their barn. He fits into the family and they want to keep him - but he is black. It would never work out with the way society is. Josh is adopted by Verdie.
- Season 6: 3. Recluse, The (1977). Jason helps a woman named Fern; she is withdrawn from the world because of a past relationship. He helps her come out of the shell. Meanwhile, Ben goes to find work in Norfolk.

- Season 6: 5. Seashore, The (1977). The Waltons visit the seashore and stay at the Baldwin's beach home. An English girl is staying there. Meanwhile Ben stays home, hoping to enjoy time alone. He is anything but alone.
- Season 6: 6. Volunteer, The (1977). GW Haines proposes to Erin. She says no. GW joins the army. Meanwhile, Rover, the family peacock, is in heat and making a lot of noise.
- Season 6: 7. Grandchild, The (1977). Mary Ellen gives birth to the Waltons' first grandchild, John Curtis Willard. However, Cassie, a lonely and superstitious teenage neighbor whose premature baby girl was stillborn, believes John Curtis was sent to replace her own baby and she kidnaps him. It is up to Olivia to gently explain to Cassie that someday Cassie will have another baby, but that John Curtis is really Mary Ellen's.
- Season 6: 8. First Casualty, The (1977). GW Haines is in the army. Dies at camp. He left a will, where he left his land to Erin. She is hurt at the loss.
- Season 6: 9. Battle Of Drucilla's Pond, The (1977). Soldiers practice war at Drusilla's pond. Corabeth teaches a tap dance routine to Elizabeth and Aimee. They put on a show.
- Season 6: 10. Flight, The (1977). Jim-Bob meets a boy who is on his way to join the Air Corps, but the boy never actually leaves. Turns out he is a runaway. Meanwhile, Elizabeth misses Grandma, and thus builds a grandmotherly relationship with Maude Gormley.
- Season 6: 11. Children's Carol, The (1977). Two British children, separated from their parents due to the war, come to stay with the Baldwins. Jason is not sure he can fight in the war. Jim-Bob uses a short-wave radio and makes an amazing connection on that 1940 Christmas morning.
- Season 6: 12. Milestone, The (1977). Feeling old and restless, Olivia visits her Aunt Kate in her home town. Jim-Bob wants to get a job but needs both parents to sign a permission slip.
- Season 6: 13. Celebration, The (1977). The Waltons have one remaining payment on their mortgage. John and the family rush to complete one big lumber job to pay it off. As they celebrate, Ike Godsey faces financial trouble. The Waltons help Ike.

- Season 6: 16. Festival, The (1978). Jason practices his music for a town festival. He finds Josh, Verdie's son, plays the horn. They practice together. The festival organizers do not want Josh. Elizabeth and Aimee Godsey compete for the same boy. (Spring 1940)
- Season 6: 17. Anniversary, The (1978). John and Olivia celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Mary Ellen and Curtis begin to feel the stain of separation due to the war.
- Season 6: 18. Family Tree, The (1978). Jason helps Verdie research her family tree. They find people who knew her family. Elizabeth starts writing to a soldier at Camp Lee, pretending she is 18 years old. Sends Erin's picture as her own.
- Season 6: 19. Ordeal, The (1978). Elizabeth falls while standing on top of a wood pile. Fractures her leg. Doctors doubt her ability to walk ever again.
- Season 6: 20. Return, The (1978). John-Boy returns to Walton's Mountain to write about the failing economy and lack of jobs. He talks Mr Guthrie into opening the old mine. As the menfolk are in the mine, it collapses. John makes a decision about working at a defense plant.
- Season 6: 21. Revelation, The (1978). John-Boy proposes to Daisy and she says yes. Daisy reconnects with her mother and learns some surprising news. Mary Ellen and Aimee open a lemonade stand. Grandpa finds a way to increase sales.
- Season 6: 22. Grandma Comes Home (1978). Grandma returns from the hospital but the family does not let her do anything. (Ellen Colby recovered enough from her stoke to return to the series.) An overweight boy is interested in Elizabeth. (This is Will Geer's last episode.)
- Season 7: 1. Empty Nest, The (1978). Grandpa Zeb (Will Greer) has died and everyone is mourning. Neighbor Flossie Brimmer has also died. Mary Ellen and Erin move to Charlottesville into an apartment to be on their own. John tries to get a large lumber contract.
- Season 7: 2. Calling, The (1978). A cousin of the Baldwin sisters visits. She is preparing to be a nun. Jim-Bob falls for her. Ben hires someone to help at the mill. Turns out he is an alcoholic and causes more problems than he helps.

- Season 7: 9. Beau, The (1978). A former boyfriend of Grandma's comes to visit. He understands her struggles with a stroke. Elizabeth is upset that someone seems to take Grandpa's place.
- Season 7: 10. Day Of Infamy (1978). Mary Ellen packs to go to Hawaii to join Curtis at Pearl Harbor. However, news spreads of the Japanese attack, and the United States is involved in WWII. Mary Ellen receives bad news about Curtis.
- Season 7: 11. Yearning, The (1978). A new minister joins the community at Walton's Mountain. Elizabeth helps him settle in, and begins to fall for him. Erin helps the Balwin sisters with their memoirs.
- Season 7: 12. Boosters, The (1978). Ben starts an autocourt venture with Corabeth. Then they find out the government stops all new constructions. Ben comes up with a clever plan to use old cabins. Meanwhile, Yancy takes a mail course to become a barber.
- Season 7: 13. Conscience, The (1979). Jason expresses doubt to the army recruiters that he could ever kill a person. Ben is embarrassed by his hesitation to serve. Meanwhile, Jim-Bob cannot wait to serve.
- Season 7: 14. Obstacle, The (1979). John-Boy asks his family to help Mike Paxton, a friend who was recently handicapped. They show him being in a wheelchair is not the end of his life and show him how to adjust. Erin helps him get a job at Pickets.
- Season 7: 15. Parting, The (1979). Olivia is always tired these days. When a rest does not help, she sees a doctor and learns what is wrong. Jim-Bob tries to show that he can do more than just work on machines.

- Season 9: 7. Last Ten Days, The (1981). Ben and another captured solider are led from camp on an unknown trip. Turns out they are taken to American soldiers and the Japanese solider surrenders. Jason doesn't want to get married right away, and Toni is upset. (August 1945)
- Season 9: 8. Move, The (1981). Ben returns home. He plans on leaving the Waltons' mill and becoming an engineer. Olivia has a relapse in her health and has to again leave Walton's Mountain.
- Season 9: 9. Whirlwind, The (1981). Jonesy arrives in town and meets Mary Ellen. They have a whirlwind romance and plan to marry. Mary Ellen receives some surprising news about Curtis after all these years. Jason buys the abandoned Dew Drop Inn and reopens it.
- Season 9: 10. Tempest, The (1981). Mary Ellen travels to Florida. Curtis is still alive, wounded and different. They talk and realize the marriage is indeed over. Erin and Picket come to blows and she quits. Jonesy talks Picket into rehiring Erin for a better deal.
- Season 9: 11. Carousel, The (1981). Cindy's father dies suddenly. At the funeral, Cindy sees a woman who she remembers from childhood. She remembers events of her youth and tracks down her real mother. Drew stays with the Waltons and has time for everyone except Elizabeth.
- Season 9: 12. Hot Rod, The (1981). Jim-Bob and Jody open an auto repair place. The Baldwin sisters' still is discovered by the government and they come to dismantle it. Ike helps them find a way to continue making the recipe.
- Season 9: 13. Gold Watch, The (1981). Stanley Perkins is retired and returns to the mountain to see Rose. He helps the community but is really falling apart. His sister arrives to take him home, but the community helps him realize he still has things to offer for work.
- Season 9: 14. Beginning, The (1981). Another new minister begins at Walton's Mountain. The church is in disarray, but he gets the community involved. The Walton family finds out Toni is a Jew and are unsure of how to react. Toni questions her own faith.
- Season 9: 15. Pearls, The (1981). Corabeth returns to her family home to help a dying aunt. Her twin Orma Lee visits the mountain. (She is played by Ronnie Claire Edwards.) Orma Lee is quite the opposite of Corabeth. Elizabeth wants to visit Olivia and John in Arizona.
- Season 9: 16. Victims, The (1981). A neighbor is being beaten by her drunken husband and the Waltons help. Jim-Bob purchases some war surplus items and it seems like he will lose his investment, but turns out there is a buyer.
- Season 9: 17. Threshold, The (1981). John-Boy needs a job. At the university, he convinces them to let him set up a television media program. He hosts a television spot. Jim-Bob builds a television so they can see the show. Zuleika tries to come between Rose and Stanley.
- Season 9: 18. Indiscretion, The (1981). Corabeth finds a romantic letter in Ike's belongings and wants a divorce. She says she could not forgive him; he says he forgave her. Turns out he knew about her visits with former friend. Drew and Elizabeth celebrate one year.
- Season 9: 19. Heartache, The (1981). Rose and Stanley plan to get married. Rose finds out she has a heart condition and tries to break it off. He does not mind staying on the sidelines of life with her. Cindy gets a job but soon realizes she wants to be a stay-at-home mom.
- Season 9: 20. Lumberjack, The (1981). A new company starts in the area and wants to sell wood to the Waltons. Erin and he fall in love. Jim-Bob and Ike try to find metals in the mountains to make money, but they find illegally dumped waste.
- Season 9: 21. Hostage, The (1981). One of Mary Ellen's mountain patient dies, leaving his young teen to the helping hand. Mary Ellen intervenes because she is so young. He kidnaps Elizabeth until he gets the girl.
- Season 9: 22. Revel, The (1981). The series ends with John-Boy returning to New York with a new book - that is not good. He returns to the mountain to write more. Meanwhile, the Balwin Sisters plan a class reunion. When no one attends, the community becomes their guests.
